This workshop in 3D digital graphics will cover basic modeling, color, transformations and rendering in high-end 3D software (Maya). No previous experience required.

Marla Schweppe is a full professor in the School of Design at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Early in her career she worked in theatre, television, movies, and dance in New York City and over 30 counties in four continents. She has been teaching computer graphics and animation for more than two decades. She built the graduate and undergraduate programs in computer animation at RIT, revised the program in Computer Graphics Design to incorporate 3D, and developed the new program in 3D Digital Graphics she now chairs. Her scholarly work includes the incorporation of her theatrical background into virtual theatre over the internet, interactive digital performances and experiences, animatronics, explorations in physical interaction, and collaborative support for visualization and simulation of information and ideas.

When you make installation art, you purposefully transform the way your audience experiences a particular place. In this workshop, we'll discuss the work of installation artists (digital and traditional media), and try out different approaches to analyzing and refining the "experiences" we're creating with our own art. We'll also talk about practical differences between monitor and screen-based work and installation work, and different techniques for potentially adding interactivity into the mix.

W. Michelle Harris is a media artist who freely mixes digital immaterials with found and crafted objects in a variety of textures. She is a frequent contributor to Rochester's ImageMovementSound festival, and in 2006 won the award for Most Innovative Entry in the Rochester ArTech Digital Art Exhibition with her interactive video projection, "Upper NY Bay: 2001". Harris is an Assistant Professor at RIT, teaching courses in interactive media.

In this workshop we'll use Adobe Photoshop to make composite images that challenge traditional conceptions of time and space. If you can, bring hi-resolution jpegs of people and places so that we can create an image bank that all workshop participants to draw from.

This workshop will explore some of the non-toxic options available in contemporary printmaking. A variety of processes will be demonstrated and participants will have an opportunity to experiment by producing small prints.

Eileen Feeney Bushnell received her MFA from Indiana State University in Printmaking after receiving a BFA in Art Education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She is an Associate Professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology where she teaches for the Foundations Department. In her own practice she has continued to work with prints, exploring a diversity of non-toxic processes and the jointly authored book Design Dynamics: Integrating Design and Technology, published by Prentice Hall.

This course will introduce the basic modules of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 while demystifying the concepts of non-destructive image editing, metadata, keywords, image ingestion and the controls of the Library and Develop module. Time permitting; we will also review the Slide Show, Print and Web modules.
Participants will leave with a list of helpful resources and links to further their skill building. Participants should be comfortable with a Mac environment for this fast paced seminar. Images will be provided for you to work with, but you are encouraged to bring your own as well!

Patricia (Patti) Russotti is an artist, educator, curriculum developer, and international presenter. She is currently a New Media Professor in the School of Print Media, and a tenured professor with the College of Imaging Arts & Sciences at Rochester Institute of Technology. Patti provides imaging services for corporations, public service organizations and individual artistic commissions. She has done extensive consulting for small and mid-sized in house graphic service departments, ad agencies and photography studios. These endeavors focus on assessing and refining existing workflows, creating new workflows, establishing best practices and providing training programs. Committed to providing Best Practices and Industry Standards training to faculty in colleges and universities she has played a major role in assisting integration within curriculum, as well as offering updates to faculty technology and software skills. As an active digital and photographic imaging artist, she has produced a wide range of work for corporations, public service organizations, individual artistic commissions, funded projects and public exhibitions. Patti also develops and presents technical and creative corporate seminars, workshops, and training programs. Her focus is the application of cutting edge computer, alternative, and historic imaging processes, best practices and workflow. Patti’s career has a breadth and depth of experience and skill in workflow, image making (analog and digital), the creative process, design and education. Her positions previous to, and concurrent with RIT include: the management and operation of a multimedia lab; ownership and operation of an advertising photography studio and an imaging services, consulting group.
As a trainer on Image processes and workflows, Patti has provided digital imaging training since the first version of Adobe Photoshop. She has provided custom training for companies in the US as well as internationally. Clients have included: Kodak, Xerox, Canon, The American University in Bulgaria, The American University of Lithuania , Shanghai University and Moscow University.

Why teach web development as part of a digital art series? Because artists need a website to showcase their work. There's certainly also an art to designing a website, but we won't get into that. We'll look at the basics of building a website including basic HTML tags, a quick overview of cascading style sheets (CSS), and how you go about getting the site you build on the internet. This workshop is designed for the novice with little or no previous experience. Be sure to bring a pen and paper to take notes!

Illustrator is a vector program commonly used into the graphic design industry. One of the most useful and tricky components of this software is the elusive pen tool. It seems everyone wants to learn photo editing. Photoshop is the leading computer application on both the Mac and PC platform that allows a user to do many customizable things with their photos. Our workshop will include an introduction to the toolbar and some simple but effective ways to resize, crop, and edit your photographs for making digital prints and uploading to the Internet.

Relief Casting: This workshop will give participants an
introduction into the casting process. A direct carving approach will
be taken to pre-made molds then aluminum will be melted to 1500 degrees
and poured into the molds. Workshop participants can participate in the
pour and take home the finished aluminum castings. Alternative
materials to apply to the casting process will be discussed.
